The fundamental difference between digital and traditional wallpaper is that digital wallpaper is not preprinted. Digital wallpaper patterns (gaining in popularity since around 2010) are stored as images which can then be adjusted for wall size and color before printing. You will often see then referred to as wall murals, bespoke, custom, etc.
But printing and material technology has quickly evolved. First, with the addition of a flexible fiberglass material, plus top coatings, which enable shower and exterior walls to be covered (with certifications for contract use and warranties). Materials (called "substrates") and inks can now also be eco-friendly meeting appropriate requirements. This information differs for each manufacturer and is available on each pattern page.
More recently, materials have been developed which enable wallpaper to be soundproof, used mainly in offices and hotel guest rooms. Thus adding decoration at low cost to these environments. The producer, InstabileLab, has also introduced wallpapers that can be safely be used on floors. Patterns and materials have also been formulated for kitchen backsplashes. We also feature wallpapers that "glow in the dark."
Lastly, for the design conscious, all the patterns on these pages can be ordered in fabric for use as draperies or upholstery. We're adding these to moderndesign.io, best though to email tpaulino@moderndesign.io for the most up-to-date information.
Recent reports suggest that the digital wallpaper market will reach $14B by 2025. It's really no wonder, ...these are definitely "Not Your Father's Wallpapers."
