Design Guide

When filtering to search, the following classifications can be used singularly or in any combination. Products can feature in multiple classifications.

Design Filter Classifications:

Minimal/Modern:
We combine these two styles because they often feature very similar furniture design. For us, Minimal/Modern design furniture emphasizes simplicity, functionality, uncomplicated forms and clean lines. It prioritizes essential pieces that serve a purpose while creating a clutter-free space, embracing a "less is more" philosophy, and uses natural materials and neutral colors to enhance the sense of spaciousness and calm. The design of some products in this classification has not focused on comfort!

Contemporary:
Contemporary furniture is not tied to a specific historical period. Our definition features furniture that evolves with current trends and incorporates elements from various design movements. It emphasizes clean lines with comfort a priority, and a blend of materials, often natural - and often featuring a neutral color palette with pops of bold colors. Tables can be lacquered with glossy finishes, and chrome and glass sometimes feature.

Traditional:
Our classification could also be called classic furniture. Generally, it includes furniture inspired by European designs from the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly the Victorian era. It is characterized by its formal, ornate, and detailed aesthetic, often featuring dark wood, luxurious fabrics, and intricate carvings. We include limited products in this classification on Modern Design Platform because modern designers sometimes feature traditional products to create an eclectic overall scheme.

Iconic:
This is an overused term! For us, furniture is only included in this classification if it is highly recognizable, influential, and enduring. Furniture included here has transcended its functional purpose to become a cultural touchstone. It is often associated with design icons such as Charles and Ray Eames, Florence Knoll and Le Corbusier. Iconic furniture features innovative design, quality craftsmanship, and lasting appeal. We make a few exceptions for modern products that we believe will become iconic over time.

Eclectic:
Eclectic furniture features a design style that combines elements from different design periods, styles, and cultures to create a unique and personalized space. Every piece in this classification has the potential to be a "stand out" within a design scheme. Modern designers use eclectic furniture to create a mix-and-match approach, often incorporating vintage pieces alongside modern, traditional, and contemporary items, all while maintaining a sense of harmony and balance.

Heritage:
Heritage style furniture design refers to a design approach that draws inspiration from the past, incorporating elements from historical periods and traditional aesthetics to create a sense of timeless elegance and sophistication. We feature products in this classification that have been in manufacturers collections for a significant time, they connect to the history of the manufacturer and are generally recognised by the design source.
