MANUFACTURER

Manufacturer: Sika Design

About Manufacturer:

KNOWN FOR: A passion for natural rattan furniture, refined Scandinavian style, focus on sustainable design, and collaborations with many of the top designers in the 20th Century. Products are of high quality, and have lasting value at mid-market prices.

THE CONTRACT MARKET: Used by major hotel groups, cruise ship customers and restaurant chains worldwide.

ARTISAN: Sika Design’s first products were baskets, reed shoes, and lampshades, always handmade using natural rattan. Since 1942, it has been the cornerstone of this company’s products. In 2003, Sika expanded its collections by introducing the Artfibre outdoor collection to great success, yet still, today, both rattan and outdoor aluminum furniture continue to be made by hand using traditional methods and simple tools.

DESIGNERS: Include Arne Jacobsen, Franco Albini & Franca Helg, Nanna & Jorgen Ditzel, Tove Kindt-Larsen, Michel Buffet, Viggo Boesen, Robert Wengler and Yuzuru Yamakawa.

SUSTAINABILITY & THE ENVIRONMENT: Sika’s highest priority is to manufacture quality furniture that can last for generations. Their mission is to produce furniture products from materials that have the least possible impact on the environment, that customers can and want to keep, and which eliminate the need for frequent replacements. Sustainability is therefore woven into their DNA, and green transitioning has become a fixed focal point. At Sika-Design, in fact, collections and products have been retired when they could not meet new sustainability standards. Historically, they have been dedicated to these ideals and have worked systematically with them since 2013. Even recyclable packaging materials and distribution policies are established with this in mind. Together with sister company Cane-line, Sika was the first furniture business in Denmark to obtain an ISO14001 certification.

SIKA WANTS YOU TO KNOW: Rattan is often confused with bamboo, but unlike hollow bamboo, rattan is a solid material. This makes rattan highly bendable and can therefore be transformed into the most amazing shapes. The fact that rattan is a solid material makes rattan furniture very durable and able to last for generations.
