Waterproof wallpaper, used in damp areas such as showers, bathrooms, spas, and for kitchen backsplashes, etc., is made possible by technical advances in backing materials, inks and the additional top coatings. These technical advances follow the creation of Custom wallpaper, which is an image-based system.

Traditionally, wallpapers had fixed roll width patterns and were printed on various papers and kept in stock. In our platform, we call these “Pre-printed” wallpapers.

For today’s custom wallpapers, patterns are stored as digital images which can be rescaled to the wall size, and often recolored. These digital images can then be printed on a variety of backing materials. The underlying material for waterproof wallpaper is a flexible fiberglass. The pattern is printed onto this surface. The backing material can cover small cracks but when covering tile, etc., a foundation is required. There are various top coatings, which, for example, enable chemical scouring of shower walls.

The images shown here are the four foundations that can be used to install wallpaper in the shower. Use of any of these foundations, plus the waterproof wallpaper and topcoats, is significantly less expensive and saves time over traditional methods of remodeling such as removing tile.

For the general contractor, the fiberglass backing material is slightly easier to install than normal wallpapers. Being slightly thicker, it slides easily into place.

Waterproof wallpapers are win for everyone. Wet areas can be transformed. Costs are lower. Time is saved. And inconvenience is minimized.

In theory, every digital pattern can be printed for use as a Waterproof Wallpaper, however not every manufacturer has adopted the technology.

Using the Discovery Filter: in Function choose “Shower”

On Product Pages: Under the Function button, click the “Shower” button to choose it. If you arrive at a Product Page from a different search, and there is no “Shower” button, that pattern is not available as a Waterproof Wallpaper.
